MikroTik GPERx6 Explained: Outdoor PoE, SFP+ and Long-Distance Network Design

Published 10/09/2026

Description

In this video, I take a practical look at the MikroTik GPERx6 and where it fits in real-world networking. When you work with copper Ethernet, sooner or later you hit the 100 meter limit, and that becomes very relevant for outdoor cameras, perimeter security, warehouses, large gardens, long fences, and remote edge installations. 0:00 - Introduction 0:13 - Description 5:59 - Lab Setup 6:55 - SwOS Light 7:06 - Configuration Walkthrough 13:34 - Conclusion I start with the problem the device is trying to solve: extending network and power where standard copper runs become restrictive. Then I compare the idea behind the original GPeR and GPeRx4 with the newer GPERx6, and explain why this model is much more interesting for larger outdoor deployments that need a mix of copper, fiber, PoE, and flexible powering. After that, I show my lab setup, go through the hardware design, and discuss what stands out in practice. I cover the port layout, outdoor build quality, powering options, DC outputs, and where I think the device is genuinely useful versus where a small outdoor switch in a weatherproof box might still be a better option. I also take a look at SwOS, walk through the management side, and point out one thing that confused me in MikroTik’s own example diagram regarding PoE on RJ45 port 1. So this is not just a spec overview — it is a practical technical walkthrough with real observations, possible use cases, and a few limitations you should know before buying. Perfect for: Network professionals, ISP deployments, home lab enthusiasts, Proxmox/Homelab setups, and anyone working with fibre connectivity.
