STUN Explained: Public IP, Port Mapping, NAT Types (with Live Demos)
Published 19/02/2026
Description
“STUN” (Session Traversal Utilities for NAT) helps an endpoint learn the IP/port mapping it has as seen from the public Internet, which is key for peer-to-peer connectivity in NAT’d networks. STUN isn’t a complete NAT traversal solution on its own—it’s a building block used by broader traversal approaches (for example ICE) and can also be used for keep-alives and connectivity checks in specific usages. In this video, I explain the why (IPv4 exhaustion, NAT, CGNAT/mobile networks), the core STUN concepts, and then jump into hands-on demos: a Windows client, a .NET MAUI client, and finally the STUN library implementation.
