TrueNAS SCALE Upgrades: Cobia to Goldeye | What Breaks, What Works

Published 02/04/2026

Description

Follow a real TrueNAS SCALE upgrade journey from 23.10 Cobia through 24.04 Dragonfish, 24.10 Electric Eel, 25.04 Fangtooth, and into the next generation release line, while checking what happens to storage, apps, and virtual machines along the way. Electric Eel is the major turning point because TrueNAS moved Apps from the old Kubernetes backend to Docker, including migration of existing app data during upgrade. In this video, I start with a baseline install, walk through the UI and core setup, then upgrade version by version to show what stays stable and what changes underneath. TrueNAS documented the Electric Eel app migration path from Kubernetes to Docker, and Fangtooth introduced LXC containers plus QEMU/KVM virtualization through Incus instances as part of a broader platform shift. 0:00 - Introduction 0:13 - Description 5:12 - 23.10 Installation 7:14 - Configuration 12:20 - Advanced Boot 14:06 - Basic Configuration 19:21 - Virtual Machines 21:47 - Dashboard 22:22 - Kubernetes Apps 24:06 - 23.10 to 24.04 26:44 - 24.04 to 24.10 28:45 - 24.10 Configuration 30:35 - 24.10 Pool Upgrade 31:36 - 24.10 to 25.04 34:38 - 25.04 Pool Upgrade 34:58 - 25.04 Initial VMs 35:14 - 25.04 to 25.10 37:35 - Conclusion What you’ll see: A baseline TrueNAS SCALE install and initial configuration. How Apps behave before and after the Electric Eel transition. TrueNAS says Electric Eel replaces the Kubernetes Apps backend with Docker and keeps the old ix-applications dataset to allow rollback to the previous Dragonfish installation. What changes in Fangtooth for containers and VMs. TrueNAS says Fangtooth introduced LXC containers and QEMU/KVM virtualization through Incus “instances,” and marked that feature as experimental at release. Why the VM story felt unstable. TrueNAS later documented that 25.04.2 reintroduced “classic virtualization” with the Virtual Machines feature, which confirms that the virtualization direction changed during the Fangtooth cycle. Wh
